Translating is more than an act!
As the Italian director Federico Fellini claimed several times:
"a different language is a different vision of life".
That is why translating should not be about copying & pasting from the machine translation service we all know.
Besides the knowledge of vocabulary, phonology and morphology, a good translator should also be aware of typical expressions as well as of the social, historical and geographical context in which a language has evolved.

What does a cultural mediator do?
The role of a cultural mediator consists in preparing and helping people, businesses and governmental bodies to predict and forsee cultural differences and avoid problems arising from these.
In business, the expertise of a cultural mediator, together with language skills, represent a great advantage in order to establish a solid relationship between companies having different cultures and visions.

IN PRACTICE
My bachelor's thesis consisted of a translation project from Japanese to Italian of an online travel guide of Nagasaki, the city where I studied for 6 months in 2017.

My work experience as a booking agent in 2018 gave me the opportunity to interact with customers all over the world via telephone and e-mails. Everyday I had the chance to communicate in Italian, English, French and Japanese at a fast-moving pace. In order to provide a high-quality service, each situation needed a different approach and a solid cultural understanding.

In 2020 I worked as an intern in an organization promoting Italian culture, food and tourism in Belgium. As a translator, I provided multi-language translations using the following languages: Dutch, Italian, English and French.
